Utilities & Water Treatment

This category of work has been a mainstay of our trade for many years. Starting some 20 years ago with waste water and clean water treatment plants - our design expertise has now progressed to gas networks and power infrastructure.

We have many long running distribution frameworks for the supply of investigation & design expertise for several statutory authorities, including Northern Gas Networks - and more recently Integrated Utility Services (IUS).

Typical projects include substations, pipeline diversions, above ground installations CaGI’s and rail/road crossings.

Utilities and Water Treatment

Through our multiple frameworks and sub-frameworks, we are preparing a steady output of complex designs coordinated with mechanical and electrical specialists.

Our surveying and geotechnical teams provide site investigation data for site development and planning.

Designs include new build extension and modification and site hardening for security upgrades.

Pipeline and cable rerouting supplies us with challenging projects, requiring street work permitting and traffic management. These schemes can also involve bridge inspections and load assessment as well as micro tunnelling and culvert construction.

In association with our Rail team, we provide undertrack and road crossings alongside having an excellent track record in negotiations and submissions to Network Rail and Highways England.

Our water treatment skills include design of treatment work buildings, settlement & contact tanks, intake pits & flumes, pumping stations and also pipelines. All the above require the design of water retaining concrete structures, often on piles, with complex circular/cone shaped reinforcement.

Site Upgrades

Whether you are looking to make minor modifications to existing infrastructure or undertake a full site upgrade, our multi-discipline design team can be there with you every step of the way.

From Planning applications and feasibility studies, to commissioning and handover, we have many years of experience and a wealth of knowledge to share.

Pipelines Diversions

Pipeline diversions are necessary for a range of reasons, from new residential developments and highways schemes to erosion and other safety critical requirements.

GGP Consult have provided civil, structural and mechanical designs for a large number of new pipeline installations and pipeline diversions around the UK. Most have involved consultation with third party land and asset owners to provide a suitable and economical solution.

Security

We have assisted with the critical infrastructure security upgrades for a number of key clients in the energy sector. From the installation of lighting columns or CCTV towers to full site security enhancements comprising full perimeter electric fencing, intruder deterrents and access control.

Pipeline overcrossings

Our engineers are able to 3D Scan, and undertake structural inspections of a range of pipeline overcrossing, followed by assessments of bridge structures and pipe supports and provide advice on recommendations for repairs and strengthening works.

Hydrogen - The fuel of the future?

For years Hydrogen has been viewed as the fuel of the future, the most abundant substance in the universe. For the time being at least, it is likely to be utilised in conjunction with a combination of other renewable and low carbon sources.

GGP Consult have provided the civil and structural engineering design services for the HSE testing facilities in Buxton. These facilities represent a world’s first, where controlled testing is being carried out on existing gas network assets. The aim of the testing is to determine the suitability of repurposing the gas network to carry blended gas, a mixture of methane and hydrogen, or 100% hydrogen to homes and businesses in the UK.

Electricity
Substations

As part of Ideal Heating’s continued investment at their site in Hull, we have provided designs for the infrastructure upgrades, including increased power demands required for the new advanced R&D facility on National Avenue.

As part of the feasibility phase, we coordinated the various surveys require to gather information on existing buried services and soil conditions utilising GPR and topographical surveys and site investigations. Once completed, the site of the new substation and associated cable ducting routes confirmed.

The new substation compound comprises 2 x transformers on concrete plinths and a High Voltage Intake substation within a GRP enclosure. All foundation designs were raised above existing ground levels to mitigate the impact from flood risk.

EV Charging

GGP Consult have provided civil and structural engineering design consultancy services for a broad range of EV charging installations. These vary from car charging facilities at offices and commercial developments to electric bus station depots for TfL in London.

A bus route from Crystal Palace to Orpington has been completed utilising standard EV overnight charging facilities at the depots at each end of the route, but these are supplemented during the day with rapid ‘opportunity charging’ with kerbside pantographs.

These pantographs provide a quick boost of power within just 10 minutes to enable the buses to turnaround for the return trip with minimal disruption to the timetable and without the need for additional vehicles.

Solar Parks

We were appointed by Integrated Utility Services, as part of their contract with Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust to deliver the infrastructure for a 5MW solar park, installed across 2 locations at their Castle Hill site in Cottingham on the outskirts of Hull. The scheme is a part of the Trusts’ wider plan to become carbon neutral by 2030.

GGP Consult completed borehole soil investigations and civil foundation designs and routing drawings for the HV cabling network, transformers and substations within purpose built, secure compounds at each location
